EXCLUSIVE FORUM FOR INDONESIAN GAMER

Berita khusus Indonesia.

Dear my Froidholics,

Hmmm... kelihatannya cukup menarik nih. Berharap saja supaya sekolah atau kampusmu dikunjungi mereka. Untuk info lengkapnya, kunjungi www.indonesiangamer.com.

HOW TO TURN OFF AUTOPLAY SERVICE IN WINDOWS

- Bagaimana Menonaktifkan Fungsi Auto-play di Windows -

Works well in: All versions of Windows 9.0 and XP.
I didn't try this in Vista yet. Maybe later.

Auto-play is a base-service that preserved by Windows. Thanks to Auto-play, we don't need any sweats to open the folders from inserted device. Just plug, and then play, like they said. Nowadays, most of program discs or flash discs have their own auto-play file.

But, thanks to auto-play too, viruses and worms also can penetrate our computer easier than before. Tons of viruses, like the popular trojan "fake services.exe", attacked our PC because of Auto-play function. That fake services.exe can detected easily if you turn off your auto-play services, and then do the right-click on the media. If "Open" replaced with "Explorer", it means that trojan was hiding in your flash disc, but no need to worry because the trojan is not infecting your PC yet. Just format it, and the problem will be solved.

But, there is another story if you're still turn on the auto-play service at that time. The trojan/virus will execute their auto-play, and inject its batch file to your PC, poisoning all of executable files in your PC.

An anti-virus is convenient, but if your PC lacks of memory, the only thing that anti-virus can do is just slowing down your PC’s works. The other way, you can try to turn off your auto-play service – I think this service is not very important; you can still access your removable storage media without auto-play. Half of new trojans and worms variants can be blocked with this simple way. The problem is: there are many persons who still don’t know how to turn off the auto-play service permanently. If you’re doing a right-click in your media, and then select properties > auto-play and just turn off it from there, you’re just turn off auto-play for that media only, not absolutely turn-off the auto-play service.

So, The Cold Hands reader, I’ll tell you how to do this simple thing:

  1. Go to START menu, select Run. Type gpedit.msc and click OK.
  2. After Group Policy was opened, click Administrative Templates (dropped-down under Computer Configuration menu in the left-bar)
  3. Double-click folder “System” in the right bar. Search for “turn off auto-play”. Double-click it.
  4. The pop-up window of “Turn off auto-play” properties will be appeared. Select radio button “Enabled.”
  5. In the pull-down menu of “Turn off auto-play on” tab, select All drives to turn off auto-play and auto-run function in all drives. Select CD-ROM drives for CD-ROM only. Click OK.
  6. Repeat step 1 until 5 with Administrative Templates. This time, is the one which dropped-down under User Configuration menu in the left-bar.
  7. Restart your PC

To turn off your auto-play function manually, just do this:
1) Do the right-click at your drive
2) Click Auto-play tab.
3) Select file type in pull-down menu, thus choose “select an action to perform”, and then click “take no action” menu. Click Apply.
4) Do the same things with other devices as you desire
5) Restart your PC

If you want, you can activate your auto-play again with select “disable” at “turn off auto-play” in Group Policy.
